PostHeaderIcon Your Patio Door is not much of a Security Barrier

Raise your hand if you have a broom stick or other device in your patio door track for security! Ok, just mentally raise your hand so your cube-mate doesn’t think you are strange. Why do you have that stick in the door? Because you are smart and you have already figured out that the locking systems on patio doors are pretty worthless and that a crow bar or large screwdriver would pop the door off the lock. The problem is, even the stick isn’t going to stop a burglar from prying the door up, off the lock, and over the stick. (Sarcasm here) One brilliant (and popular) door manufacturer puts the operable panel on the outside and makes it really easy for the burglar to remove the entire panel from the frame. (They say they do it that way for better energy efficiency).

People also ask about the lock on the patio screen door. I’ve always wondered about that question? My reply always has been they are good at keeping little kids inside the house. Windows are probably the easiest way to enter a house, but people– and burglars are lazy people too, don’t like to crawl in, so they usually bust in the front or patio door either with a kick or a crow bar. Security barriers are quite necessary at patio doors since they cannot be secured properly. Security windows and doors are not as effective as one would think. What did Will Smith do to protect his home every night in “I am Legend?” He closed heavy exterior shutters over every opening. What do city shop keepers do before they go home for the night? Close the security shutters over the doors. The addition of security shutters at one Chicago electronic store eliminated all burglary attempts during the past 25 months. Before the shutters, they had 4 break-ins in four months.

Rolling shutters are the best and most secure products to protect a home’s exterior openings. QMI Security Solutions manufactures shutters in the USA for both commercial and residential applications. Most European homes have exterior rolling shutters for security, energy efficiency, sunlight, and noise control. It’s rare to see a home without rolling shutters. Patio doors are often the most draft prone openings in a home. The air space between the shutter curtain and the glass creates an excellent insulator. The curtain itself blocks the wind, cold, driving rain, and hot sun. If you stop the heat or cold BEFORE it gets inside the home, the energy costs go down and the home is more comfortable. An insulated wall has R-19 insulation; while a very good window is typically less than R-3 (single pane glass is .91). Thus, the unprotected patio door cold/hot glass radiates into the room, making the room uncomfortable and increasing the cost to maintain a better temperature.

That same airspace insulates exterior noises as well. If you truly want to sleep in on a Saturday morning without the sunlight, the neighbor’s lawn mower noise, and the other neighbor’s barking dog, an investment in security shutters will really pay off. Plus, what protects you from those undesirable elements will also repel would be burglars. QMI Security Shutters has videos on their website showing test shutters being attacked by sledge hammers, crow bars, and 2×4’s shot from a cannon. The rolling curtain is retained in the vertical side rails with special retention screws, making it virtually impossible to pry the curtain out of the rails. Protecting a patio door with a security shutter will exceed $2,000. Unlike an alarm system, however, this shutter will prevent the intruders from ever entering your home in the first place, never gives off false alarms, and makes the home more comfortable.

PostHeaderIcon Custom Kitchen Component: Countertops

One of the most prominent features of custom kitchens is perhaps the unique and highly diverse countertop selection. Countertops are a very important component of the kitchen. It is where most of the activities are centered like the washing of food, cutting of vegetables, meat, etc. It is frequently made of highly durable material to prevent corrosion from the chemicals used commonly in the art of cooking. Countertops are also known by various monikers, including kitchen tops, worktops, bench tops, or simply a counter, depending on the native language and the preference of the user.

Custom kitchens tend to be more specific in the nature of their countertops since it is highly specific to the preference of the cook or the user. Some countertops tend to be hardier than others, while the aesthetic value is also considered greatly in the matter of deciding which countertop to use. Countertops can come in different colors or different materials altogether depending on the amount of projected usage. Countertops for the busy cooks tend to be more sturdy than most. Although, generally, countertops are required to be able to withstand considerable amount of chemical and physical stress, some, indeed, are higher in quality than the others. It could be made of stone, of hardwood, or of metals, and is commonly supported by a cabinet at the bottom.

The owner of custom kitchen has the power to choose which kind of countertop to use. Some countertops do not have sinks installed onto them. But some do, and this is very convenient for the cook since it supplies an easier way to wash certain cooking materials and food in order to optimize both the aesthetic and hygienic quality of the potentially delicious gourmet they are cooking. Countertops also require regular cleaning since it could accumulate dirt as any other kitchen facility. Tiled countertops tend to be harder to clean than others since it could accumulate dirt and grime in-between cracks.

PostHeaderIcon From Windows Replacement to Remodeled Space: Home Improvements

PostHeaderIcon SPECIAL GIFT

My mother in law gave me different kinds of expensive curtains as her gift for me for my birthday. We both have the same taste in choosing colors and style when it comes to curtains and other home accessories. I am not really expecting that she will give me a very expensive stuff. I am so close with my mother in-law and we treat each other more than like real mother and daughter. Being an additional member of a family is not that easy. We need to remember that it will take time to be accepted in the family. Problems with in-laws are inevitable especially so when they simply meddle in the couple’s parochial problems. The best way is to know the emotional state, social needs, physical problems or worries. Knowing them better would lead to better understanding of their attitudes towards you. We need to remember that developing resentment would only widen the gap between the families. We need to learn to accept our in-laws feelings in order for us to be able to understand them. I am so lucky that I am well accepted by my husband’s parents and families right away. I will always be thankful for all their efforts and help to me and my husband.

PostHeaderIcon HOUSE RENOVATION

My husband is planning to renovate our house and we try to get the actual prices of the materials needed for the renovation. We have been planning to do the renovation almost a year now but we had to save enough in order for us to be able to do it. Now we have save enough money from our salary and we are now ready to start buying the necessary stuff that will be needed. We have talked to the persons that will be in charge to do the job. Renovating a house is not that easy because you need to spend a lot too. I and my husband made a marketing plan in buying the materials needed. We tried to compare the prices from different hardware in order for us to get the reasonable price for each items to be purchase. We have agreed to just purchase in bulk so that we will be able to avail a big discount. Our friends were able to help us to find the workers that will do the renovation. Our children were very excited about our plans because it will make their room more spacious and cozy to stay with. We are planning for a house party once the renovation is finish.

PostHeaderIcon SUGESSTIONS

My friend last night asked me about opinions regarding what she has to change or renovate within her house. She showed me around and asked me to look at every corner of the house. She has a great house, which is why I wondered why she even needed to renovate or conduct home improvement. Her house was a two storey house, the first level was consist of her kitchen, dining area, living and receiving area and a bathroom at the end of the hallway. And her second floor was all about the rooms of the house, the house has 4 rooms, 1 for master’s bedroom, 1 for her sons room, 1 is for the maidens’ room and the 4th room is left for their guest room. The masters’ room has its own bathroom and another bathroom that is being use for the whole house. She wanted to change the setting of her house, in terms of the lighting and repositioning of all the furniture that she has in their living area. I gave her some sort of advice and I suggest that she better ask the help of an expert like an interior decorator so that she will be directed properly about her plans.

PostHeaderIcon A Frustrated Dream

When I was a kid I have always wanted to be an architect or engineer, because I wanted to be part of people’s lives. I really opted to know the concept on how to build buildings or houses for people to live or settle in. But as time closes out on me, too bad I was not able to pursue my dream. Instead I studied on how to be a carpenter, because my parents were not capable of sending me to college. But in these sense I could still be part of some ones life, by building it for them. First I started as a helper to my uncle’s friend who is an expert handy man, from him I learned what skills I have right now. My first project with him was remodeling a rest-house by the lake. It was not an easy job for us to deal with. Because the owner of the house wanted so much change that it almost required us to rebuild the whole house itself. Home improvement takes a lot of ideas that you should be particularly aware of, especially on what or how it could possibly look like after the work has been done; or else or if your not satisfied with the outcome of it, it would only cost you double job.
